What Is Taxotere?

Taxotere, also known by its active ingredient docetaxel, is an anticancer agent commonly used during chemotherapy to treat various forms of cancer such as breast cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer.

Taxotere combats cancer by over-stabilizing the structure of cancer cells.

This method prevents cancer cells from breaking down and reproducing, thereby reducing the growth and spread of cancerous cells within the body.

Taxotere is part of the “taxane” family of cytotoxic drugs, a class of chemotherapy treatments made from plant alkaloids.

Taxotere was developed by Sanofi-Aventis and first approved for limited use in May 1996 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, meant to help treat individuals with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

It was later approved by the FDA for wider use in 2004.

Taxotere is commonly prescribed to treat patients with:

  • Breast cancer (early-stage breast cancer, operable node-positive breast cancer or metastatic breast cancer)
  • Lung cancer (locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC))
  • Prostate cancer (metastatic prostate cancer)
  • Stomach cancer (advanced gastric adenocarcinoma)
  • Head/neck cancer (squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN))

Taxotere Lawsuits Consolidated Into Multidistrict Litigation

The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) consolidated Taxotere vision loss cases into multidistrict litigation (MDL 3023) in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The Taxotere litigation will be handled by Judge Jane Triche Milazzo.

The MDL for Taxotere hair-loss litigation (MDL 2740) is also centralized in the same district court and handled by the same judge.

Taxotere Eye Injury: What Vision Loss Side Effects are Associated with the Chemotherapy Drug?

Taxotere has been found to lead to potentially permanent damage to the eyes and lacrimal obstruction.

The chemotherapy drug has been linked to the onset of serious eye injury.

Patients treated with Taxotere who experience symptoms relating to vision loss, watery eyes, and other side effects of the cancer treatment should seek immediate treatment from a medical professional.

Timely intervention is important with vision problems related to Taxotere.

taxotere eye injuries

Taxotere eye injuries include:

  • Canalicular stenosis
  • Punctal stenosis
  • Lacrimal Duct Obstruction
  • Excessive tearing or eye-watering (epiphora)
  • Permanent watery eyes
  • Conjunctivitis or blockage of the tear ducts and lacrimal system
  • Scarring of lacrimal system
  • Blurred vision
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Eye infections and irritation
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Headaches
  • Potential loss of vision (cystoid macular edema)

Taxotere’s side effects can severely impact an individual’s quality of life.

How Does Taxotere Affect My Vision?

Taxotere impacts the lacrimal system, the bodily system that includes tear ducts and the structures responsible for tear production and drainage.

Taxotere enters into the tear film, and build-up of the drug may lead to scarring of the lacrimal drainage apparatus and permanent occlusion (blockage).

When the lacrimal ducts or tear ducts are obstructed, bacteria buildup can occur causing infection that can lead to inflammation next to the eye.

If the condition is allowed to worsen, permanent vision loss (cystoid macular edema) is possible.

Sanofi failed to warn and inform about Taxotere’s vision side effects (especially Epiphora) and, as such, thousands of cancer patients who use the chemotherapy drug to combat their cancer have to suffer additional potentially permanent damage.

Canalicular Stenosis And Punctal Stenosis

Canalicular Stenosis and Punctal Stenosis refer to occlusion, scarring, or obstruction of the Canaliculus or Punctum, two vital parts of the system that allows tears to drain.

Taxotere secreted into the tear film can irreversibly damage the lacrimal system.

Epiphora (Excessive Tearing)

If left untreated, affected individuals might not be able to drain tears naturally, leading to the excessive tearing, “Epiphora” or excessive tearing/watery eyes, other health effects, and the potential need for corrective surgery.

Taxotere Eye Injury Misdiagnosis

Breast cancer patients often take a number of medications and chemotherapy drugs to manage their disease.

With the multitude of medications come side effects that may be difficult to pinpoint the source of.

Taxotere side effects, such as watery eyes and other eye injuries, could be hard to identify as coming from the chemo drug.

Doctors and eye specialists may also misdiagnose eye conditions related to Taxotere use as allergies or other side effects, not knowing the full scope of the dangers related to conditions like Canalicular Stenosis, Punctal Stenosis, Lacrimal Duct Obstruction, Epiphora, and more.

If you took Taxotere and are now suffering from chronic watery eyes or other eye injuries that can potentially be traced back to your use of the chemo drug, get in touch with a Lacrimal Specialist or Ocular Plastic Surgeon as soon as possible.

These sorts of doctors will have a keen understanding of Taxotere-related eye injuries and side effects.

Taxotere Vision Damage Lawsuits are based on scientific evidence that Taxotere usage has been associated with a variety of eye injuries and vision loss symptoms.

These eye injuries and symptoms include:

    • Excessive tearing in the eyes (epiphora)
    • Lacrimal duct obstruction (canalicular stenosis)
    • Blocked tear ducts
    • Optic neuropathy
    • Swollen eyelids
    • Tears remaining in eyes for extended periods
    • Permanent watery eyes
    • Eye pain and irritation
    • Conjunctivitis

  • What are Average Taxotere Settlements?

Individual Taxotere Lawsuit settlement amounts are yet to be determined.

The Taxotere Eye Injury Lawsuit is ongoing, and as more developments occur, we will have a better idea of what to expect for individual Taxotere settlements.

However, our Taxotere Lawyers estimate that individual Taxotere Lawsuit settlement amounts may range between $20,000 to a few hundred thousands dollars depending on the circumstances of an individual, their damages, and also the direction of the Taxotere litigation.

These projections are merely estimates based on prior product liability and dangerous drug lawsuits.

These estimates are by no means a guarantee of financial compensation in the Taxotere Eye Injury Lawsuit.

TorHoerman Law operates on a contingency fee basis, meaning our clients do not get charge any legal fees until after they have received compensation for their injuries.

  • What is the Taxotere Hair Loss Lawsuit?

In Taxotere Hair Loss Lawsuits, plaintiffs allege that Taxotere causes permanent hair loss or chemotherapy induced alopecia.

The Taxotere Hair Loss Lawsuits are separate from the Eye Injury Lawsuits, and are centralized in a separate multidistrict litigation.

The Taxotere Hair Loss MDL is MDL 2740.

Sanofi knew since the 1990s that cancer patients taking Taxotere had an increased risk of hair-related ailments like alopecia.

Sanofi did not provide adequate warning to patients of hair-loss side effects, prompting lawsuits.

Sanofi finally added permanent hair loss as a side effect of taking Taxotere on its FDA approved label in 2015.

  • Is There a Taxotere Class Action Lawsuit?

No, there is not a Taxotere Class Action Lawsuit for injuries and damages related to Docetaxel therapy.

Taxotere Eye Injury Lawsuits and Taxotere Hair Loss Lawsuits are both consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL).

MDL is a special federal legal procedure designed to speed up the process of mass tort lawsuits, in which all plaintiffs allege similar things or have been injured by the same product.

MDL and class action lawsuits are distinct from one another.

In class action lawsuits, a settlement is divided evenly among all clients, regardless of the individual circumstances, damages, or facts of each person’s case.

In multidistrict litigation (MDL), settlement compensation is distributed to plaintiffs according to the facts and damages of each individual case.

  • What is the Taxotere Treatment Plan?

Taxotere’s treatment plan typically runs at three-week intervals, but other treatment options recommend a weekly dose.

Fewer trips to the doctor for treatment make Taxotere more attractive to both patients and doctors.

Taxotere has also been approved for administration outside of the hospital (in 60-100 mg/m2 doses).

Similar chemotherapy treatments require hospitalization to cope with extended infusion times.

As is warned on the Taxotere label, toxic death occurs in around 2% of metastatic breast cancer patients and about 11.5% of patients with other tumor types involving abnormal liver function who are using Taxotere.

  • Is Taxotere Still In Use?

Of the drugs used to treat breast cancer, Taxotere is the most prescribed drug in its class (taxane) – some sources estimate that 75% of breast cancer patients will receive Taxotere as a form of treatment.
