Hair Straightening Products and the Increased Risk of Uterine Cancer

Manufacturers of chemical hair straighteners, hair relaxers, and other hair straightening products are facing lawsuits from countless women who have developed uterine cancer and other serious adverse health effects.

Frequent users of hair straightening products suffer from a higher uterine cancer incidence. Women using hair straightening products were found to be twice as likely to develop uterine cancer than women who did not.

About The National Institute Of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Sister Study

The NIEHS, a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), conducted an 11 year-long study, called the Sister Study, to identify risk factors for breast cancer and other health conditions.

Over the course of the study, it was found that women who use chemical hair straightening products were developing uterine cancer at twice the rate that those who did not use hair straightening products. According to the study, around 60% of those who used hair straightening products in the previous year self identified as black women.

Hair products have been pondered as increasing the risk for certain cancers in women for some time now. This study from the NIH has shown that frequent users of hair straightening products suffer from higher rates of incident uterine cancer.

Other studies from the NIEHS Environment and Cancer Epidemiology group found that permanent hair dye and straightening or relaxer products may increase the risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

About Uterine Cancer

About Uterine Cancer

Uterine cancer is a general term for cancers that effect the uterus, the main organ of the female reproductive system.

Uterine cancer is classified into two (2) types:

  1. Endometrial Cancer
  2. Uterine Sarcoma

1. Endometrial Cancer

Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer, with over 60,000 Americans diagnosed with it each year.

Endometrial cancer impacts the lining of the uterus, and to “cure” the cancer, a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) is required.

2. Uterine Sarcoma

Uterine sarcoma is a disease in which malignant cancer cells form in the muscles of the uterus or supporting tissue.

Uterine sarcoma is a relatively rare type of uterine cancer, making up only 2-5% of all uterine cancer cases.

Health Disparities in Uterine Cancer

Another study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) looked at the rates of uterine cancer among a diverse population, further finding that black women suffer from higher rates of uterine cancer and higher mortality rates from the disease.

Black Women Reported to Have Higher Risk of Uterine Cancer

The Endometrial Cancer Action Network for African Americans (ECANA) found that black women have a 55% greater mortality rate than white women.

According to ECANA, one of the reasons for the disparity is that black women overwhelmingly experience a delay in diagnosis and medical care for endometrial cancer, putting them at a much higher risk for dying from the disease.

Hair Products and Cancer Cases

The recent link between hair straightener use and uterine cancer cases is one of several other research findings that have shown that hair products contribute to health disparities.

As mentioned previously, some permanent hair dyes have been linked to a higher risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

These claims are also being investigated by our attorneys.
