The first land to become Brentwood was purchased in the early 1800s by businessman Louis J. Bompart. Decades later, a man named Thomas Madden joined the community and quickly assumed responsibility for many of the town’s operations. The area was subsequently named “Maddenville.” In the early 20th century, the neighboring city of Maplewood decided to incorporate Maddenville into a city to avoid being annexed.
