Subsequent to the Onewheel recall announced in September 2023, further lawsuits for individuals injured by Onewheel electric skateboards are being investigated.
The Onewheel device, produced by Future Motion, has been at the center of numerous injury-related concerns and lawsuits.
The most prevalent issue reported is the device’s tendency to suddenly stop during use, deactivating its balancing technology and causing the rider to be thrown forward in a nosedive.
This malfunction has led to a variety of injuries, ranging from minor abrasions to severe head and brain trauma, broken bones, and even punctured lungs.
Notably, Future Motion has faced a minimum of four wrongful death lawsuits due to these nosedive incidents.
In May 2020, one such lawsuit was filed by the family of a Houston man who tragically lost his life following a sudden Onewheel shutdown and subsequent fall.
Additionally, two significant product liability claims have been lodged against the company.
These cases highlight major incidents: one in San Diego in August 2020 where a man suffered severe head injuries, and another in September 2020 in New York, where the victim sustained head and brain injuries, facial fractures, broken ribs, a broken arm, and a punctured lung.
Compounding these individual cases, Future Motion has been accused of misleading advertising practices.
Allegations suggest the company has downplayed the Onewheel’s defects and overly promoted its ease of use and safety, leading to a class action in California challenging the advertising methods for the Onewheel XR.
