Truvada Lawsuit HIV Drug Linked to Dangerous Side Effects

Truvada Lawsuit Alleges Risks Known, Didn’t Provide Safer Alternative

Truvada Lawsuit

What is Truvada?

Truvada is used for two purposes. In conjunction with other HIV medications, it is used to help control HIV infections. The medication is not a cure for HIV or AIDS but is used to treat symptoms of the illnesses, such as preventing other infections or cancers. Truvada is intended to help manage and improve your quality of life.

The medication is also used for individuals who are HIV-negative and have a high risk of developing HIV. Approved for this use on July 16, 202, it is intended for those actively having unprotected sex, infected with an STD, use or abuse of drugs and alcohol, or are with partners infected with HIV. “This method to prevent HIV infection is called pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP,” according to AIDSinfo.com.

It is very important Truvada is taken with other HIV medications, otherwise, it will be less effective than intended as an HIV treatment.

The drug itself contains two different HIV medications – emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). Both medications belong to a group of HIV drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Manufactured by Gilead Sciences, the drug was approved for HIV prevention in July 2002.

What are Other TDF Drugs?

TDF drugs are not limited to just one, such as Truvada. There are four others that can cause the serious side effects mentioned below.

  • Truvada, 300 mg
  • Viread, 300 mg
  • Atripla, 300 mg
  • Complera, 300 mg
  • Stribild, 300 mg

What is the Difference Between TDF and TAF HIV drugs?

Gilead Sciences has come under fire for delaying the release of a safer HIV drug, known as TAF drugs, to boost the sales of TDF HIV drugs. TDF drugs have been found to cause serious side effects that cause injury to individuals already suffering from HIV, such as kidney and bone injuries. A safer version, a drug TAF, known as tenofovir alafenamide scientifically, has been known to be a safer alternative that does not pose the same risks since 2000. It is known as a safer alternative because there are smaller concentrations of the main ingredient, tenofovir, in the blood. The smaller concentration can prevent it from accumulating in the blood and kidneys.

Despite the knowledge of a safer, alternative drug, Gilead did not release TAF drugs until recent years. Their negligence has put many at risk when there could have been a better alternative. Critics say the manufacturer purposely withheld the safer HIV drug for monetary purposes.

Critics allege Gilead Sciences purposely didn’t bring a TAF drug to the market in order to maximize profits of Truvada. In addition to bringing in millions of dollars to the manufacturer, the out-of-pocket cost for many consumers has skyrocketed. At nearly $2,000 for a 30 day supply, the outrageous costs have prevented many from continuing the use of Truvada.

A Truvada lawsuit has been filed alleging Gilead Sciences knew of the serious side effects, yet failed to properly warn consumers of the risks.

According to the Mayo Clinic, signs of kidney failure are nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness, changes in how much you urinate, decreased mental sharpness, muscle twitches and cramps, swelling of feet and ankles, persistent itchiness, chest pain, shortness of breath, and high blood pressure.

If you have suffered from one or more of the symptoms listed above and currently take or have taken Truvada, contact your doctor immediately. Kidney failure is a very frightening potential side effect of the HIV drug, Truvada.

What is the Difference Between a Class Action and Mass Tort Lawsuit?

When filing lawsuits, there are two types of lawsuits to consider. All members of a class action are treated as a collective group and receive the same amount of compensation at the end. However, in a mass tort, each person is treated as an individual. The amount of compensation awarded at the end will be determined on that particular individual’s circumstances.

Truvada falls under the category of a mass tort. If you have suffered from adverse effects from a TDF drug such as Truvada, contact TorHoerman Law for help.
