Intoxication suspected in serious hit-and-run crash, police say

ST. LOUIS, MO – A Tennessee man was charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that happened in LaSalle Park on Monday, KSDK reports.

The Tennessee man, who was suspected of being impaired, was driving away from a party in Ballfall Village when he failed to yield to a male pedestrian and ran him over with his black Ford Edge.

The male pedestrian flew into the air, came down, and then got trapped in the black Ford Edge. The driver refused to render aid, stop, and continued driving, dragging the man behind.

The driver then came onto the intersection of South 4th Street and Gratiot Street, where he was ejected. The driver ran him over again before fleeing the scene.

The pedestrian seemed to be left in serious condition.

Thanks to nearby video footage, police were able to enter the man’s license plate number and track it down at a gas station.

Upon arrival, police gave the driver, 32-year-old Cory Aiono, his Miranda rights. Aiono decided to speak to the police and confessed that he thought he struck something, but did not know what it was.

Aiono’s passenger, a woman, also told police that Aiono was very intoxicated and said she remembered him running over a pedestrian, but did not know what the pedestrian looked like.

Police arrested Aiono. He has been charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and leaving the scene of an accident with physical injury, and has been held with no bond.

Aiono’s next court date has not been announced.
