The collision caused the St. Louis officer, Nathan Spiess, to lose a leg

ST. LOUIS, MO – A man received a 366-day prison and five-year probation sentence on Tuesday, Jan. 20, in connection with a crash that caused a St. Louis police officer to lose his leg.

KSDK identified the man as Frank Carr and the police officer as Nathan Spiess. The collision happened in March of 2025. Preliminary details show that Spiess conducted a traffic stop on a 15-year-old teenager who stole a car when Carr crashed his Cadillac CTS Sedan into Spiess and the teenage suspect.

Carr did not tend aid to Spiess and the young suspect and immediately fled the scene in his car. The teenager was left in critical condition, and Spiess suffered a serious leg injury. The injury was so significant that Spiess required amputation on that leg, leaving him with only one leg.

If Carr violates his probation, he may also face an additional seven-year prison sentence. Carr pleaded guilty in November of 2025 for “leaving the scene of an accident that caused physical injury and one count of tampering with physical evidence in a felony case.”

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office confirmed Carr did not receive a plea agreement.
