One vehicle caught on fire as a result of the I-70 crash

ST. LOUIS, MO – One person was killed, and another was injured in a five-vehicle collision that happened south of St. Louis International Airport on Friday.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said the incident unfolded at 1:15 p.m., when an 18-year-old man, driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, drifted off I-70 West, which caused his car to become airborne. The car then crashed into a concrete barrier and was then struck by a 2024 GMC Sierra pickup truck.

The impact of the collision caused the Chevrolet Malibu to catch on fire, which then crashed into another concrete barrier. Debris was flung across the eastbound lanes, which were struck by three other vehicles: a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, a 2015 Hyundai Tucson, and a 2007 Ford Five Hundred.

The 18-year-old man, from Florissant, died from his injuries at 1:21 p.m.

The driver of the GMC Sierra pickup truck sustained minor injuries. MSHP identified the pickup truck driver as a 52-year-old man from Smithton, Illinois. Northeast Fire crews transported him to Barnes-Jewish Hospital for treatment.
