Two other children and the adult driver were injured.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MO – A 6-year-old girl died Monday morning, May 19, following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 21 near Union Township, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The fatal accident happened off the northbound side of MO-21 near Woodhaven Road, at around 7:50 a.m.

Officials say a 25-year-old man from Cadet was operating a 1997 GMC 1500 northbound when the vehicle traveled off the roadway’s west side and hit a mailbox. Shortly after, the vehicle was sent across the roadway before running off to the left side, where it collided with a tree.

The Cadet man and his three juvenile passengers–two girls ages 4 and 6 and an 11-year-old boy, all from Potosi–were rushed to Washington County Memorial Hospital. At 9:18 a.m., the 6-year-old girl was pronounced deceased.

According to the MSHP crash report, the surviving children suffered minor and moderate injuries. The driver, who was the only occupant not secured by a seatbelt at the time of the crash, also sustained moderate injuries.

The GMC, which was totaled in the wreck, had to be towed from the scene.
