Professional Career

Chad is a nationally recognized litigator who concentrates on complex cases against large national defendants. Scientifically complex lawsuits are his specialty, and he has played a central role in winning some of the most significant product liability cases in the country.

Chad started his career litigating pharmaceutical cases. He led document review and deposition strategy in the Actos bladder cancer lawsuits, which resulted in a $2.4 billion settlement. He also litigated the Pradaxa blood thinner lawsuits, which resulted in a $650 million settlement.

Chad was one of the primary litigators for the Juul e-cigarette litigation. He led strategy for adolescent lung injury cases, which included document review, deposition strategy, discovery strategy, preparing Plaintiffs’ experts, questioning Defendant’s experts, and arguing Daubert Motions. The case resulted in a confidential settlement.

Chad is currently leading the state court litigation against Abbott in the Preterm Infant Formula Necrotizing Enterocolitis. The attorneys at TorHoerman Law tried the first case in the country against Abbott and obtained a $495 million verdict. Chad led strategy for discovery, document review, deposition strategy, preparing Plaintiffs’ experts, questioning Defendant’s experts, and arguing expert exclusion motions.

Chad currently serves on the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee in the Paraquat Parkinson’s Disease litigation. He has successfully litigated numerous other complex cases such as radiation exposure, poorly manufactured homeopathic medicines, and class actions.

Prior to becoming an attorney at TorHoerman Law, Chad worked as an extern (aka working for the government for free) for the Office of General Counsel (OGC) at Health and Human Services (HHS). He assisted with the rulemaking for the Affordable Care Act and issues related to False Claims Act qui tam cases.

He handles e-discovery (ESI) and despite Defendants’ best efforts, has obtained millions of highly confidential corporate documents to be used as evidence during depositions and trials. He is an expert in analyzing large databases of documents to identify corporate wrongdoing.

Chad approaches every case with the mindset that litigation is a tool for accountability. He represents individuals and families facing life-altering harm and he takes that obligation seriously. He works to ensure that corporate actors are held responsible for unsafe products, misleading conduct, and their failures to warn.

He is deeply involved in every phase of litigation—from early case development through trial—and is known for his intensity, preparation, and command of both the factual record and underlying science.

Chad knows what matters most in litigation: results.

Personal Life

Chad attended and played football at Wabash College, which is the rival school of Tor’s alma mater DePauw University. Wabash was the school for those that were smarter, more athletic, better looking, and harder working.

Chad developed his work ethic growing up on his family’s corn and soybean farm in Bismarck, a small town in East Central Illinois.

He attended St. Louis University School of Law. After working as the first law clerk at TorHoerman Law, he knew he never wanted to work anywhere else.

In rare moments of spare time, he enjoys outdoor adventures with family. He snow skis, hikes, bikes, kayaks, and camps. He coaches youth sports, volunteers in the community and enjoys golf, fishing, pickleball, games, and anything that is a competition. For things that aren’t a competition, he will turn them into one. He never misses an opportunity to dress up, and no one has a more robust collection of ridiculous hats and outfits.

He dislikes corporations that lie and being bored and will try just about anything but sitting still.

Mostly, though, he spends his days (and a lot of nights) reading corporate documents and researching the facts and scientific data in his lawsuits. Chad is extremely passionate about the work that he does because he truly believes lawyers can make a difference – both in people’s lives, and for the greater public good.
