Johnson & Johnson announced Monday it has agreed to pay $5.5 billion to resolve roughly 76,000 lawsuits alleging its talc-based baby powder caused ovarian cancer, covering 99.75% of the remaining claims in state and federal court.

The settlement must be accepted by 95% of claimants before becoming final, and unlike J&J’s prior bankruptcy-based settlement attempts, this deal addresses only existing claims rather than future ones.

An attorney who represents roughly 2,500 claimants and helped negotiate the deal said J&J could ultimately pay $7 billion or more since the settlement assigns per-claim values without capping the total payout.

J&J’s litigation head called the claims “meritless” but said the company chose to settle for closure, noting J&J expects to pay $3 billion in 2027 with further payments in 2028.
